In our current world, it often feels like we’re living in a war zone. Headlines scream, deadlines press, temptations whisper, and accusations echo. Yet even in the midst of this chaos, God has not forgotten your address. He stands with you, fights for you, and places His strength within you so that you can sustain your spiritual momentum even when life feels overwhelming.
Why Do We Need Spiritual Armor?
The Apostle Paul wrote to believers in Ephesus who faced many of the same challenges we do today – parents, workers, students, and servants of Christ who loved Jesus but still experienced backlash from the world around them. Paul didn’t offer them just a pep talk; he gave them a practical plan for spiritual warfare.
We’re Living in a “Mayday” Kind of Day
“Mayday” is the universal distress signal meaning “help me.” It was specifically designed to cut through static and be clearly understood in emergency situations. Today, we’re living in what could be called a “Mayday” kind of day – a time when grave and life-threatening emergencies happen regularly, both in the world around us and sometimes in our own hearts.
What Does the Bible Say About Spiritual Warfare?
Paul writes in Ephesians 6:10-17: “‘Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.'”
Our Battle Is Not Against People
It’s crucial to understand that our struggle isn’t against other people. The real battle is spiritual – against dark forces that have schemes and don’t sleep. This is why we need more than human strength or determination; we need spiritual readiness for the daily battles we face.
How Do We Be Strong in the Lord?
The command to “be strong in the Lord” isn’t a call to physical strength or human determination alone. It’s about spiritual readiness. This strength comes from a loving Lord who acts, leads, and lifts us up. The call is to take our place in Him, stay close, lean in, and let His strength carry our lives.
What Does This Look Like in Real Life?
When God gives strength:
- Our hearts steady
- Our knees stop shaking
- Our souls can stand firm
This is more than grit – it’s grace that moves. The passage speaks of a real struggle that feels like a wrestling match, with hands locked and muscles shaking in close contact. Some days, the Christian life does feel exactly like this.
What Is the Full Armor of God?
Paul doesn’t give us a partial kit or a spiritual smorgasbord where we pick and choose. He emphasizes the “full” armor – a complete outfit with nothing missing. The verb “put on” is ordinary clothing language, suggesting this should be part of our daily routine.
The Six Pieces of Spiritual Armor
1. The Belt of Truth
“‘Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist'” – Ephesians 6:14a. Like a Roman soldier’s belt that holds everything together, truth provides the foundation for all other spiritual protection.
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
“‘With the breastplate of righteousness in place'” – Ephesians 6:14b. This protects the heart spiritually, representing both Christ’s righteousness and the righteous life we’re called to live.
3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
“‘And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace'” – Ephesians 6:15. These provide stability and readiness, grounding us in the peace that comes through the Gospel so we can bring calm into tense situations.
4. The Shield of Faith
“‘In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one'” – Ephesians 6:16. The shield both covers us and links us with other believers. Roman shields actually hooked together – we need each other and are stronger together.
5. The Helmet of Salvation
“‘Take the helmet of salvation'” – Ephesians 6:17a. Knowing we belong to Christ guards our thoughts from despair and confusion, helping us wrap our thoughts around God.
6. The Sword of the Spirit
“‘And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God'” – Ephesians 6:17b. This is the only offensive weapon in the armor. When fear crowds in, answer with a psalm. When guilt arises, answer with the cross. When confusion swirls, answer with clear lines from Scripture.
How Do We Put On This Armor Daily?
Just as someone with a prosthetic leg must pause each morning to put it on before functioning properly throughout the day, we need to pause each morning and intentionally put on the full armor of God. This enables us to walk an upright life in this uptight world.
Living the Armor, Not Just Imagining It
This passage isn’t about imagining invisible armor – it’s about living a life that is:
- Anchored in truth
- Shaped by righteousness
- Stabilized by peace
- Sustained by faith
- Assured by salvation
- Guided by Scripture
What Can We Learn from Palm Trees?
Scientists have discovered that storms actually cause palm trees to become more flexible and grow higher. The storms don’t destroy them – they make them stronger. Similarly, our storms in life don’t have to take us out; they can take us higher.
As palm trees age, they produce more fruit until eventually the weight of their fruitfulness causes them to break. What a lesson for our lives – the older we grow in Christ, the more fruit there ought to be.
Life Application
This week, commit to a daily “armor routine.” Each morning before you start your day, intentionally put on each piece of spiritual armor through prayer and Scripture reading. Ask yourself:
- Am I grounding myself in God’s truth today?
- How can I live righteously in my interactions?
- Where do I need to bring God’s peace into tense situations?
- What lies do I need to counter with God’s Word?
- How can I link shields with other believers for mutual protection?
Remember, spiritual retirement is never found in Scripture. Whether you’re facing a difficult season or enjoying smooth sailing, the call remains the same: be faithful, be fruitful, and finish strong. God has equipped you not just to survive the battles of life, but to stand firm and even thrive in the midst of them.
The armor isn’t just for protection – it’s for victory. When you put on the full armor of God, you’re not just defending yourself; you’re taking your stand in the strength of the Almighty, ready to face whatever comes with confidence that He has already won the war.
