Life can feel like a battlefield. Whether you’re facing challenges in your marriage, workplace conflicts, or personal struggles, it’s important to understand that you’re engaged in spiritual warfare. But here’s the good news: you’re not fighting for victory—you’re fighting from victory.
What Kind of War Are We Really Fighting?
The battles we face aren’t primarily political, personal, or based on differing opinions. At its core, this is a war for the truth of God’s word, for your identity in Christ, and for spiritual authority. It’s a battle for hearts, minds, and the souls of our families and friends.
Paul wrote the book of Ephesians while imprisoned, chained and confined. Yet he was spiritually unrestrained. Instead of praying for comfort or an easy way out, he opened up a spiritual warfare prayer that would benefit not just the Ephesian church, but future generations—including us today.
The Foundation of Spiritual Warfare Strategy
Faith and Love: Your Starting Point
Paul begins his prayer by celebrating two crucial elements: faith in the Lord Jesus and love toward all saints. These aren’t just nice spiritual qualities—they form the foundation for every spiritual battle you’ll face.
Before jumping into rebuking demons or looking for tactics, Paul establishes the importance of being anchored in Jesus Christ and unified in His body. When you’re secure in your faith in Jesus and extending love to one another, you create an unstoppable force.
Why Unity Matters in Spiritual Warfare
Most spiritual warfare can be boiled down to two main attacks: challenging your faith and challenging how you love one another. If the enemy can fracture your alignment and weaken your faith and love, you won’t realize you can walk in authority during spiritual battles.
Scripture tells us that a house divided cannot stand. The enemy wants to divide you in your faith and divide you in your love for others. But when the church is unified in faith and love, we become unstoppable.
Prayer as a Strategic Weapon
Gratitude and prayers of intercession aren’t soft disciplines in war strategy—they’re strategic weapons God has given us. You win spiritual battles in prayer, on your knees, recognizing that your faith is sealed and solid in Jesus and your love for one another is secured by what Jesus has done.
Jesus himself set this example in Luke 22:32 when He told Peter, “I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail.” This should be our prayer for one another as we walk through life’s war zones.
Seeing Beyond the Physical Battle
The Need for Spiritual Vision
Paul prays for spiritual vision—that God would give you “the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.” You cannot fight blind, and one of the enemy’s first tactics is to distort your vision.
This distortion happens when you’re moved away from consistency in your faith or when your perception of Jesus and your identity becomes unclear. The enemy also tries to disrupt how you love one another, especially during moments of irritation or conflict.
Learning from Elisha’s Servant
In 2 Kings 6, Elisha’s servant saw the enemy army and panicked. But Elisha prayed, “Lord, open his eyes,” and suddenly the servant saw heaven’s army surrounding them. The battle didn’t change, but his vision and perception did.
This is what Paul wants for you—enlightened eyes of the heart so you can see beyond physical circumstances into the spiritual realm where God’s army surrounds you.
Understanding Your Calling and Inheritance
Your Calling is Part of Your Spiritual Warfare
Paul prays that you would know “the hope to which he has called you.” Your calling is part of your spiritual weapons. Whether you’re a singer, prayer warrior, or intercessor, God has gifted you with abilities to use for His honor and glory during spiritual battles.
At minimum, everyone is called to share Jesus, declare their faith, and love one another. The world is crying out for love, and we have the answer in Jesus Christ.
The Riches of Your Inheritance
As a son or daughter of God and joint heir with Jesus, your inheritance includes much more than just the glories of heaven. It encompasses healing, health, wholeness, deliverance for family and friends, and restoration for marriages—all available between now and eternity.
The Victory Has Already Been Won
Jesus is Enthroned Above All
Scripture tells us that God raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in heavenly places, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named.” When a king is seated, it signals the battle is over—not an ongoing struggle, but a completed victory.
Colossians 2:15 confirms that Jesus disarmed all rulers and authorities, putting them to open shame through His triumph on the cross. At Calvary, Jesus placed His foot on the neck of the enemy, sealing the victory for all time.
Walking in Victory, Not Fighting for It
The enemy may whisper that it’s over for you during difficult times, but because of resurrection power, it’s not over—it was won. We fight from victory, not for victory. Too often we enter battles trying to come up with tactics when God has already declared us victorious through Jesus.
The Power of Jesus’ Name
Everything you face has a name—frustration, fear, lack of steadfastness, wavering faith. But Philippians 2:9 declares that God has given Jesus “the name that is above every name,” and at the name of Jesus, everything must bow.
Whatever you’re facing today, whatever name you give to your struggle, the authority of Jesus’ name is greater. Victory is declared over every battle through His name.
Life Application
This week, instead of approaching your challenges with panic or trying to figure out your own tactics, remember that you fight from victory, not for victory. Start each day by affirming your identity in Christ, securing your faith in Jesus, and choosing to extend love to those around you—even when it’s difficult.
When spiritual battles arise, don’t just look at the physical circumstances. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart to see the spiritual reality where His army surrounds you and victory is already assured through Jesus’ name.

- What specific battle are you facing right now, and have you named it before declaring Jesus’ authority over it?
- How secure is your foundation of faith in Jesus and love for other believers?
- Are you fighting for victory or from victory in your current struggles?
- What calling or gift has God given you that you can use as a weapon in spiritual warfare?
