Text: Habakkuk 2:1-4.
In last week’s part I of this message series we considered tendencies that keep the typical American from fully realizing God’s desirable and preferable “next” for them. Keep Jesus as OBC’s foremost vision, His purposes for us as a church family, and everything else will take care of itself (see Matthew 6:33).
In today’s part II, in comparing the church’s role with a celebration of motherhood, it is my purpose to help you continue embracing that vision, your place in the church family, and maintain them as priorities.
Mothers create (Revelation 12:1-6).
Mothers care (Psalm 36:7; 57:1; 63:7; 91:4; Isaiah 66:13; Luke 13:34; cf. Ruth 2:12).
Mothers correct (II Timothy 3:16-17).
Mothers confirm who we are (Genesis 1:26-28; Psalm 139:14).
Experiencing church as a mother can be so together in larger and smaller groups, unified in the Church’s universal purposes, (Hebrews 10:25; Acts 2:42), and always keep these as priorities:
- Ever learning the word of God together (II Timothy 3:16);
- Devotion to one another (Ephesians 4:29);
- Practicing the sacraments (communion, water baptism, child dedication, and traditional marriage ceremony);
- Be given to prayer.
- Inviting others to join God’s family, too (Matthew 28:19-20).
Stay engaged in the betterment that comes from church life (Proverbs 27:17). Apart from our ecclesial mother – the church – we wander as orphaned children in a spiritually dangerous world.
Keep as a priority finding life and power and encouragement to be on Main Street and in the margins of Rapid City to lead others to find the same life and power and encouragement you have (Luke 14:15-24)!
